How to Make Breadcrumbs From Bread

Learn how to make breadcrumbs from bread.  Not only will you save money, but you'll be able to use stale bread to reduce food waste in your home.  This is easy to make, and you can make them plain or seasoned.

Homemade Italian Breadcrumbs

My kids really like to make coated chicken and pork, so we use a lot of breadcrumbs.  I normally buy them from Aldi, but it's cheaper to make air fryer bread crumbs.

When I notice that the bread has gone stale, I put it in the freezer.  Then when I want to make DIY breadcrumbs, I get the bag out to thaw so I can make some.

I am a rebel, so I mix my breads.  I'll use store bought bread, homemade bread, and buns to make breadcrumbs.

Plus, learning how to make breadcrumbs at home means you can add your own seasonings and really make this recipe your own.

This is why so many are learning how to make breadcrumbs from bread. After all, with so many ways to use it, and with it being so easy to make, why buy store bought breadcrumbs?

You can also make homemade panko breadcrumbs and use those in place of these seasoned breadcrumbs.

What Is The Difference Between Regular And Italian Breadcrumbs?

Both regular and italian bread crumbs are popular types of breadcrumbs, and both are good for learning how to make breadcrumbs at home. It is super easy to make homemade Italian breadcrumbs, or regular breadcrumbs.

The primary difference is the seasoning that you will use to make in the recipe. Italian breadcrumbs use an italian seasoning, whereas regular use paprika and dried time.

This is why so many are learning to make homemade Italian breadcrumbs, because it is a super simple recipe and cheap to make.

How Do You Dry Bread For Crumbs?

There are three primary methods that you can use to dry the bread when making breadcrumbs. You can use an oven, a toaster, or an air fryer to dry out the bread.

Each method has its own pros and cons that will be discussed later on. However, each method is reliable and sure to yield good results.

Can I Make Breadcrumbs In The Airfryer?

Yes, as previously mentioned you absolutely can make diy breadcrumbs in the air fryer. This is a popular method as using the air fryer is fast and you can make a small amount.

This way, you do not have to heat up the oven to make small portions of breadcrumbs. This is my preferred method for making homemade Italian bread crumbs.

How To Make Breadcrumbs Without A Food Processor

When learning how to make breadcrumbs at home, one of the barriers might be not having a food processor. However, you don’t need a food processor to make diy breadcrumbs, it just makes things a bit easier.

Learning how to make breadcrumbs without a food processor is really simple. Typically, it is recommended that you use a blender or some other kind of food processor to grind up your bread crumbs into a mixture. However, a food processor is not required.

You can use the old fashioned method of just smashing the breadcrumbs into pieces with a meat tenderizer. You can also use a rolling pin for the same results. Either way, it is easy to learn how to make breadcrumbs without a food processor.

I really like my mini food processor for smaller batches of food.  It's easier to clean, and it's more affordable than a big food processor.

I also have the Ninja blender and food processor that I really love.  It's a fantastic price for the power and tools that it has.

How To Store DIY Breadcrumbs

You will want to store your DIY breadcrumbs in sealed containers, such as in a ziploc bag. If you have a small enough portion, you can also use a mason jar with a plastic lid or an airtight container.

Further, I recommend storing them in the fridge so as to prevent moisture from getting to them. Moisture is the biggest threat to the integrity of your breadcrumbs over time.

How Long Do Air Fryer Bread Crumbs Last?

Typically, as long as they do not get any moisture, bread crumbs will last a long time. However, it is recommended that you use your sealed bread crumbs within three months, as they will start to lose their flavor after that time.

DIY Breadcrumbs Ingredients

Making your own breadcrumbs is super easy to do, and only requires three ingredients. You will need the bread of your choice, though I recommend white bread.

Further, you will need your seasonings. I recommend smoked paprika and dried thyme for the best flavor results.

Here's what you need for homemade Italian bread crumbs:

How to Make Air Fryer Breadcrumbs

Step 1

To start making your own air fryer breadcrumbs, cut each slice of your white bread into inch long squares. You do not need to cut the crust off of the bread for this recipe.

Step 2

Now, place the bread squares onto the basket of your air fryer and set to roast for six to seven minutes on 340 degrees fahrenheit. After about five minutes, you should check the bread and remove it if need be. You do not want the bread to burn, so be sure to keep an eye on it.

Step 3

Now, place the baked bread slices into your blender or food processor.  Then, add in your dried thyme and smoked paprika into the blender as well. If you wish, you can use other herbs and spices of your choosing. Close the blender lid and grind in ten to fifteen second bursts.

Step 4

After each burst, check on the bread crumbs to see how finely blended they are. Blend until they are to your liking. If you want to get smaller, finer breadcrumbs you will want to grind the dried bread for longer.

Step 5

Now, transfer the ground up breadcrumbs into a sealable container, such as a jar. Tightly close the lid and use whenever you need breadcrumbs. I recommend storing them in the refrigerator as that will keep them from getting damp.

How to Make Breadcrumbs in the Oven

Step 1

Start by slicing the bread into squares an inch of diameter. Note that you do not need to to cut the crusts off for the purposes of this recipe.

Step 2

Next, place the squares of bread onto an oven safe tray. Set your oven for 300 degrees fahrenheit and bake for ten minutes, until the bread is dry and hard. Keep an eye on the bread during this process so as to prevent it from burning.

Step 3

Place the oven-dried slices of bread into a blender, along with the dried thyme and smoked paprika. Close the blender lid and blend in bursts of about ten to fifteen second.

After each blending session, check to see how finely blended the crumbs are. Now, you can blend them to your liking. Remember that for dinner breadcrumbs you will want to blend them for longer.

Step 4

Place the breadcrumbs into a sealed container, such as a sealed bag or mason jar. Tightly close the container and store in a cool, dry place such as your refrigerator.

How to Make Breadcrumbs With Toaster

Step 1

When learning how to make breadcrumbs at home, one of the easiest ways is to use your toaster. This is also a great method if you want to learn how to make breadcrumbs fast.

To start, lightly toast your bread until it is dry, but not burnt. Allow the toasted bread to sit for twenty four hours so that it can dry longer.

Step 2

Next, break the slices of toast into larger pieces to make it easier for them to blend. Add them to the blender along with your spices.

Close the lid of the blender and grind the crumbs in fifteens second bursts. The more you grind the finer your bread crumbs will be. Blend until they are to your liking.

Step 3

Now, pour the breadcrumbs into a container of some kind, such as a mason jar or a sealable bag. Tightly seal the container and store somewhere that is dry. Personally, I recommend that you store  bread crumbs in a refrigerator.

Now you know how to make breadcrumbs fast with the air fryer, oven, or toaster!
