How to Make Air Fryer Apple Chips

Learn how to make air fryer apple chips.  This is an easy way to make cinnamon sugar apple chips or plain apple chips without using a dehydrator.

We have a lot of apple trees, so I'm always looking for creative ways to use apples.  We really like dehydrated cinnamon apples.

I normally use my food dehydrator, but sometimes I have a small batch to do.  That's when I make apple chips with air fryer.

If you aren't sure about a food dehydrator, then you can make air fryer dehydrated apples.  They aren't exactly like a dehydrator, but they are very tasty.

Air Fryer Dehydrated Apples

This recipe is for cinnamon sugar apple chips, but you can also make air fryer apple chips plain.  The process is the same; just omit the cinnamon sugar.

I also sometimes just use cinnamon to make air fried apple chips.  They all taste great!

Can I Use an Air Fryer as a Dehydrator?

While I recommend buying a food dehydrator if you want to dehydrate food often, you can learn how to dehydrate apples in an air fryer.

An air fryer works by distributing the air and circulating it around the food, which is similar to how a food dehydrator works.

How Long Does it Take to Dry Apples in a Dehydrator?

These air fried apple chips take 22 minutes of baking and 5 to 10 minutes of rest time.  Learn more at how to dehydrate apples with a dehydrator.

What Temperature Do You Dehydrate Apples?

To make air fryer dehydrated apples, you'll first cook at 300 degrees Fahrenheit and then at 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

Which Apples Are Best For Dehydrating?

If you want to make air fryer apple chips without adding sugar, then I recommend Gala or Fuji apples.  Both of these apples have a sweet taste.

You can also use Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious to make air fryer apple chips.  Granny Smiths are also good, but they aren't as sweet.

Do You Have to Soak Apples Before Dehydrating?

You don't have to soak apples before making apple chips with air fryer.  However, apples can brown during drying.

Since a dehydrator takes longer than an air fryer, the apples will brown more.  With these cinnamon sugar apple chips, you won't really notice the browning.

However, you can soak your apple slices in lemon water if you want to.  Combine 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 cup of water.  Then soak the apple slices for a few minutes.

Be sure to pat the apple slices dry before making air fryer dehydrated apples.

Can You Over Dehydrate Apples?

Yes, if you cook your cinnamon apple chips too long, they can get really dry and won't taste good.

How Do You Know When Dehydrated Apples Are Done?

Dehydrated apples will be chewy, but these air fryer dehydrated apples will be firmer, more like a potato chip.

How Do You Store Dehydrated Apples?

You should store your dehydrated cinnamon apples in a zipper bag or an airtight container.  They will last about 5 days on the counter.

Before you store your cinnamon sugar apple chips, make sure that they are completely cool.  If they are warm, they can collect water from the air.  This can cause them to get soggy and go bad.

How to Make Cinnamon Sugar Apple Chips in the Oven

You can also make dehydrated cinnamon apples in the oven.

  • Cut the apples and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.  Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.
  • Place one pan on the top rack and one pan on the bottom rack.  Bake for an hour.
  • Then switch the pans and bake for another 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  • To test the apple chips, set one on the counter for 2 minutes.  If it is crisp, then they are done.
  • Turn off the oven and let the apple chips rest in the oven for an hour.

Keep an eye on the apple chips in the oven because they can get too dry.  If they are overly done, do not let them rest in the warm oven.
