How to Decorate Plastic Plant Pots

I wish I had an unlimited budget for gardening, but I'm not of a Dollar Tree girl.  They have some great deals on gardening supplies and decorations.

Their plastic flower pots are cheap at $1.25 for one or even two or three pots in a pack.

If you're like me and have fancy tastes and a dollar store budget, you can transform plastic plant pots with a little bit of paint.

I like using these for my herbs inside the house.  Then in a few years if one cracks, I can change the entire look for just a few dollars in supplies.

Can Plastic Flower Pots Be Painted?

Can you paint flower pots?  Absolutely!

Terra cotta pots work really well for painting, but you can also get painting plastic flower pots ideas.  Plastic doesn't hold paint as well as other materials, but it's fine for flowers since you don't handle them much.

What Paint Will Stick to Plastic Pots?

I used acrylic paint and added baking soda.  Adding baking soda gives the paint texture for a pretty look, and it helps the paint adhere to the plastic.

You can also use chalk paint to for DIY flower pot painting.  The chalk powder works like the baking soda to help it stick.

It's important to note that painting on plastic is not extremely durable.  I do it for things that don't get handled a lot because the paint can scratch easily.

Can I Spray Paint a Plastic Planter?

Yes, you can also use spray paint for Dollar Tree planters DIY.  You won't get the texture from the baking soda, but you can use spray paint.

I recommend using a spray paint just for plastics like one of the following:

Tips for DIY Flower Pot Painting

Here are some tips to help you learn how to decorate plastic plant pots:

  • Wash the flower pot and let it dry completely.
  • Use a fine grain sandpaper to lightly scuff the surface of the plastic flower pot.
  • Use a primer if desired.  I like Rust-Oleum primer.
  • Use chalk paint or mix the baking soda in the acrylic paint.  Using acrylic without something in it may not adhere as well.
  • This Dollar Tree flower pots DIY works best for indoor plants.  If you want to use it outdoors, use a sealer.  I like Mod Podge Spray Acrylic Sealer.
  • Acrylic paint is non-toxic.  If you use other paints, make sure they are non-toxic or omit painting the inside of the pot.

How to Make Plastic Pots Look Expensive

Step #1

Wash the plastic flower pot and let dry.  Then use a fine grit sandpaper to scuff the surface.  This is optional, but it helps the paint stick.

Step #2

Add some baking soda to a small container.  Then add brown paint.  Stir to combine.  You want the paint to be slightly thicker than it normally is and not clumpy.

Step #3

Paint the inside and outside of the pot.  Also paint two Tumbling Tower blocks.

Step #4

Use E6000 to glue the blocks to the side of the pot about an inch from the top.

Step #5

Add another coat of the paint and baking soda mixture.  Let dry.

Step #6

Place white paint on a plate and spread it to make a thin layer.  Dab the round foam brush into the paint and lightly dab around the pot.  If you get too much paint on the brush, dab it on a paper towel or newspaper to remove excess paint.

Step #7

Then get the paint brush slightly damp with water.  Brush back and forth over the white paint to spread it around.  Continue until the pot is textured with white paint all over.

Let dry completely.

Then add potting soil and seeds or plants.
