How to Make Oxiclean

Learn how to make DIY Oxiclean stain remover at home.  This stain remover is wonderful for laundry.  It boosts your detergent and removes stains.

DIY Oxiclean

Living on a farm, we can make some dirty laundry.  Between the dirt and the critters, we get dirty.

I was using a lot of Oxiclean powder, but then I learned how to make Oxiclean.  I like it just as much as the powder, but it's a lot cheaper to make your own!

You can find the ingredients at any big box store or even at Dollar Tree.  This is a big savings over the name brand, and it works great.

What Is A Homemade OxiClean Stain Remover?

A homemade oxiclean stain remover is a mixture of ingredients that will help you to remove stains from surfaces like OxiClean does.

Now, you can learn how to make oxiclean with this DIY OxiClean stain remover recipe. This article will teach you to make a powerful stain remover that you can make and use any time. Plus, it is cheaper than store bought stain remove products.

When Should You Not Use OxiClean?

As a general tip, OxiClean is not good for grease or oil stains. Rather, I recommend using a soap that is good at cutting through slick surfaces such as grease and oil for those stains.

Additionally, I do not recommend using OxiClean on metal surfaces, such as on metal counters or appliances. OxiClean is incredibly corrosive and, as such, can actually damage the surface layers of meta.

What Is The Main Ingredient In OxiClean

The main ingredient in OxiClean is sodium percarbonate, which is like a dry hydrogen peroxide mixed with washing powder. This ingredient gives OxiClean much of its stain fighting and general cleaning power.

When sodium percarbonate gets added to hot water it becomes activated and starts breaking back down into hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate. The release of oxygen molecules during this process creates bubbles that loosen the stain molecules from fibers allowing them to be rinsed away.

What Do You Need to Make a Natural Alternative to Oxiclean?

Hydrogen Peroxide: Hydrogen Peroxide is one of two primary ingredients for this recipe. It helps to clean, sanitize and remove stains.

Washing Soda: Washing Soda is a powerful stain remover as it is very acidic, and works with hydrogen peroxide to cut through stains fast.

Water: Water helps to disperse both ingredients and makes the recipe runnier making it easier to use for cleaning. Further, it dilutes it enough to make it easier to use for cleaning and less harmful to the skin.

Can I Use Baking Soda To Make DIY OxiClean?

While you can use baking soda to make this DIY OxiClean recipe, I do not recommend it. This is because baking soda is not as effective as washing soda. When learning how to make oxiclean, you want a strong formula to get the most out of it.

The difference between the two products is that washing soda is baking soda after it has been heated up. It cannot be used for cooking and should not be ingested at all. Washing soda is much better for stripping off material, such as stains.

However, this also makes it less safe for skin contact and, as such, you should avoid getting any undiluted washing soda on your skin.

Since you are using washing soda diluted in water, it is safe to use for laundry.

How Do I Use This Oxiclean Recipe?

There are all sorts of ways that you can use this recipe as a natural alternative to oxiclean. It can be used in laundry to remove stains from clothes. Further, it can be directly applied to stains on surfaces, except metal ones, before wiping them off.

The way this natural alternative to oxiclean works is that it strips the stain from the surface it is on, so it can be sprayed onto stains and messes and left to sit. When you come back and wipe the affected area down, the stain comes off with a lot more ease!

You can learn how to make oxiclean at home for use in the laundry room, kitchen, and bathroom. It is a great and handy household product to keep around, which is great because it is so easy to make as well.

DIY OxiClean Materials

Following is everything you need to make a simple homemade OxiClean recipe:

How Do You Make Homemade OxyClean?

Step One

Measure one half cup of hydrogen peroxide and put it into the mixing container that you are using.

Step Two

Then, add in one half cup of washing soda and one cup of water and pour both into the mixing container. Next, stir the mixture together.

Step Three

Your mixture is now ready to use. I recommend shaking the container before each use as the washing soda will settle over time.

I recommend using one to two tablespoons per load. If you are using it on a stain, I advise that you let it sit for twenty minutes before washing it.

This Oxiclean recipe is safe for use on all clothing, but always test fabrics before using.

Undiluted hydrogen peroxide may lighten some fabrics.  Always use diluted on colored clothes.
