There are a lot of variables at play when determining the cost-effectiveness of raising animals, especially chickens. In your first year or so of raising chickens, you probably will not see major cost benefits.

How Many Chickens Should I Start With For Eggs?

Red Star chickens have a distinct reddish brown color and are fantastic layers, consistently laying around 300 eggs a year. They are more docile than are other breeds and are a decent breed for beginner chicken farmers. 


Australorps


As a breed, Australorps are one of the best egg laying hens and are in the top few spots with respect to egg production, as they are some of the best egg production hens. 


They lay larger brown eggs and are easier to work with than are other breeds. This makes them an enticing breed for many homesteaders.


Rhode Island Reds


Rhode Island Reds are a calmer breed of chicken that produce big brown eggs. They are good looking birds that lay consistently and come in two types of breed, one better for industrial farming and the other better for homesteading. 


Sussex Birds


Sussex chickens are renowned for their meat, eggs, and show-quality making them a great all around breed of chicken. They are not the best for beginners, but for intermediate chicken farmers they can really provide a lot to your homestead. 


Orpingtons


Orpingtons are a fantastic chicken for beginner farmers as they mature quickly and are very fun and easy to work with. Plus, they have a good yield with most hens laying about 200 eggs a year.

Brahmas

Speaking of breeds that are good for colder climates, the Chantecler was specifically developed for the harsh Canadian winter. This means that they will lay eggs in the harsher winter months.

However, they are a good choice for beginners and advanced chicken farmers alike due to their egg production. Plymouth Rocks
