DIY Carpet Cleaner Powder with Essential Oils

Learn how to make an easy carpet cleaner powder to keep your home smelling fresh.  This is an easy to make recipe and costs pennies per use.

DIY Carpet Cleaner Powder with Baking Soda and Essential Oils

If your carpets could use a little freshening up between deep cleanings, this easy DIY carpet cleaner powder is so simple to make and use. Made with just baking soda and essential oils, this homemade carpet freshener can help absorb everyday odors for a fresh smelling home..

This recipe is inexpensive to make and takes just a few minutes to prepare. You can also customize the scent by choosing your favorite essential oils.

Why Make a Homemade Carpet Cleaner?

Carpets can hold onto odors from everyday life, including cooking smells, pets, shoes, and general household use. While regular vacuuming helps remove dirt and debris, a homemade carpet deodorizer can be useful when you want to freshen the carpet between carpet scrubbing.

Baking soda is a popular ingredient in homemade cleaning recipes because it can help absorb and neutralize odors. Adding essential oils gives the carpet freshener a pleasant scent.

Benefits of Baking Soda Carpet Cleaner

This simple baking soda carpet cleaner has several advantages:

  • Inexpensive: Baking soda is an affordable household staple.
  • Easy to make: The recipe takes only a few minutes to mix.
  • Customizable: Choose essential oils based on the scent you enjoy.
  • Helps freshen carpets: Baking soda can help absorb unwanted household odors.
  • Convenient: Keep it in a shaker container so it's ready whenever your carpet needs freshening.
  • Minimal ingredients: You only need baking soda and essential oil.

This recipe is best thought of as a carpet deodorizer and freshener, rather than a replacement for a deep carpet cleaning.

Best Essential Oils for a Fresh-Smelling Home

One of the best things about making your own carpet freshener is being able to customize the fragrance. There are many essential oils that can create a clean, fresh atmosphere.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil has a bright, fresh citrus aroma that works especially well in cleaning blends. It is a great choice when you want your home to smell crisp and clean.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil has a soft, relaxing floral aroma. It pairs beautifully with lemon and can give your homemade carpet freshener a fresh yet calming scent.

Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Sweet orange has a cheerful citrus fragrance and is a great option if you prefer a sweeter scent.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus has a crisp, refreshing aroma that can make a room smell especially fresh.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint has a strong, cool, minty scent. A small amount can add a refreshing aroma to a homemade carpet deodorizer.

Essential Oil Blends

You don't have to use just one essential oil. Try combining oils to create your own signature scent. For example, lavender and lemon essential oils make a simple combination that smells fresh without being overly complicated.

I really like the Clean and Fresh, Pure Space, and Sparkling Lemon blends for cleaning.

DIY Carpet Cleaner Powder Recipe

This is the exact recipe I use. I chose a combination of lavender and lemon essential oils, but you can substitute your favorite essential oils.

Supplies

Instructions

1. Measure out 1 cup of baking soda and 60 drops of essential oil (I used a mixture of lavender and lemon).

2. Mix together until combined.

That's it! Your homemade carpet cleaner powder is ready to use.

How to Use Homemade Carpet Freshener

Before using any homemade carpet cleaner, it's a good idea to test it on a small, inconspicuous area first, especially if you have delicate or specialty carpeting.

Lightly sprinkle the baking soda mixture over the carpet. You don't need a thick layer. A light, even application is all you need to freshen the carpet.

Allow the powder to sit for a short period, then vacuum the carpet thoroughly.

Always follow the manufacturer's care instructions for your particular carpet or flooring.

Is This Carpet Cleaner Safe for Pets?

This is a pet safe product.  However, because this recipe contains essential oils, it's important to use common sense around pets. Keep pets away from the area while applying and vacuuming the powder, and make sure the carpet is thoroughly vacuumed before allowing pets back onto the treated area.

Pets can be more sensitive to essential oils than people, and individual animals can react differently. If you have cats, birds, or another particularly sensitive pet, research the specific essential oils you're considering and consult your veterinarian if you're unsure.

Also keep the container stored somewhere pets cannot access it.

Tips for Using Baking Soda Carpet Freshener

For the best results, keep these tips in mind:

  • Vacuum first when needed. Removing loose dirt and debris before applying a carpet deodorizer can help you get better results.
  • Don't overapply. A light sprinkling is sufficient. Using too much powder can make vacuuming more difficult.
  • Test first. Always test homemade cleaning products on an inconspicuous area before treating a large section of carpet.
  • Vacuum thoroughly. Make sure you remove as much of the powder as possible after treatment.
  • Fabrics.  You can also use this on fabrics, but do a spot test first.  You can also make this fabric spray recipe to freshen fabrics.
