Christmas Painted Mason Jars

This Christmas mason jar craft is a great way to reuse chipped jars that you can't use for canning.  I painted mine white, red, and gold and added flowers for painted mason jar centerpieces.  They would also look cute on a mantel or on a side table.

Christmas Decorated Mason Jars

Don't you hate it when you're canning and find that a jar didn't seal because there's a small chip in the top of it?  Although I visually inspect each jar and run my finger around the rim as I clean the jars, it still happens.

Those jars can't be used for canning, but that doesn't mean they are bound for the recycling bin!  You can use them for Christmas mason jar decor.

I make painted mason jar vases with my chipped jars, and I want to share with you these Christmas painted mason jars for a cute centerpiece idea.

What Can I Do With Old Mason Jars?

Once mason jars have a small chip or crack in the rim or anywhere on them, they aren't safe for canning.  The lid won't seal right, so it can cause the food to spoil.  Learn more in my 11 canning mistakes that can kill you post.

Sometimes the chips or cracks are so small that they aren't a danger of anyone getting hurt.  If the lid is chipped so that someone could get cut, recycle the jar.

However, if the lid won't cut anyone, you can upcycle the jar into these Christmas painted mason jars or one of these craft ideas:

What Kind of Paint Will Stay on a Mason Jar?

Chalk paint works really well to make painted mason jar vases.  I think it sticks to the jar better and isn't quite as streaky.

However, I've also used acrylic paint.  Acrylic paint might need two coats, but it works pretty well and costs less than chalk paint.

You can also use a glass paint.  These need to be baked to cure, so plan an extra half an hour to bake into your total time.

Do You Need to Prime Mason Jars Before Painting?

No, you don't need to prime jars to make Christmas painted mason jars.  Just wash them and let them dry completely.

Since my jars are for painted mason jar centerpieces and don't get touched often, I don't prime.  However, for jars that will be touched more or you want them to last longer, you can use Rustoleum Spray Primer.

Then take a cotton ball and wipe the jar with rubbing alcohol to prep the surface before painting.

Using rubbing alcohol is optional, but it helps the paint stick better.

If there are any stickers or residue on them, make sure that's all gone.

Do You Paint Inside or Outside of Mason Jars?

You can paint the inside of the jar or the outside.  If you paint the inside, the jar has more of a gloss finish due to the glass.  Painting the outside is a matte finish like the finish of your paint.

I've done both.  I think painting the outside is easier to reach, but you can paint the inside.

Don't paint the inside if you will be using water like for a vase with real flowers.

Also keep in mind that fake flowers can scratch the paint of painted mason jar vases if you paint the inside of the jars.

How Do You Decorate the Outside of a Mason Jar for Christmas?

I just painted the jars and added some raffia.  You can use ribbons around the top of the jar or leave it plain.

You can also place a sticker on the jar before you paint it and then paint over the sticker.  Remove the sticker for a design.
