Snowman Mason Jar Lid Ornaments

Save your used mason jar lids to make these easy mason jar lid ornaments.  These are easy ornaments to make, and they are perfect for kids or for adults.  Since I used old canning lids, I've done this snowman Christmas ornament craft with my scouts a few times for an inexpensive craft for a group.

Snowman Canning Jar Lid Ornaments

I've been canning a lot the last three years, so I have quite a pile of old lids and bent or rusty canning rings.

My daughter has been in her Girl Scout troop since 1st grade, and she's in 10th grade now.  She's the OG Girl Scout in our troop, so I've gotten to recycle craft projects a few times in the troop.

Mason jar lid ornaments are practically free if you use old lids and have some markers and craft supplies laying around.

This year, I decided on a snowman Christmas ornament craft.  They go with these snowman top hat ornaments made from Jenga blocks for a snowman themed tree.

Both are inexpensive and easy ornaments for kids to make.

Why You'll Love This Snowman Christmas Ornament Craft

I save my canning lids when I open a jar.  I can about 300 jars per year, so I have a lot of lids!

While you can't reuse them for food, you can reuse them in other ways.  I have several plastic canning lids that I use for dry goods or to store canned food in the fridge after I open it.

However, I do run out of those lids and then use a ring and a lid to cover the jar.

I also use the spent lids for easy mason jar lid ornaments and other crafts.

Here are some more crafts for using mason jar lids:

Snowman Christmas Ornament Craft Variations

This is a pretty basic craft since it's for ornaments for kids to make.  However, you can dress it up and make it fancy.  Here are some variations for your mason jar lid ornaments DIY.

  • Instead of painting the lid, use white fabric.
  • Add a small felt stocking cap or hat.
  • Use small buttons for the eyes and mouth and orange felt to cut the carrot nose.
  • Use pom poms and colored pipe cleaners to make ear muffs.
  • Use just the canning lid and don't use the ring if you don't have any.
  • Add a top hat made of felt.  You can also use cardboard covered in fabric.
  • Use snow themed washi tape to wrap around the canning ring.
  • Use glitter mod podge over the white paint for some sparkle.

Mason Jar Lid Ornament Supplies

Here's what you need to make these snowman Christmas ornaments DIY.

Mason Jar Lid and Ring - You'll need both the ring and the lid to make these mason jar lid ornaments.  You can use new lids and rings or reuse some old ones.  This is a perfect craft to use lids that you've already used for canning and a ring that has a little bit of rust on it.

Black and Orange Fine Point Sharpie - I recommend using actual Sharpie brand for best results.  I haven't found a generic brand that works as well.  You can also use paint pens.

Paint Brush - Use a foam brush or a regular paint brush.

White Chalk Paint - I prefer chalk paint because it sticks better.  You can also use acrylic paint, but it might get scratched during storage.

Black and White Checkered Ribbon - I got my ribbon at Dollar Tree, but you can also find black and white checkered ribbon on Etsy or at most craft stores.

Kids may need help with the hot glue, but these are easy ornaments for kids to make.  I hope you enjoy this snowman Christmas ornaments DIY.
